Step 6 | Letting Go

After making a fearless and moral inventory, and confessing to God, ourselves, and to another person, the exact nature of our wrongs . We are now ready to take a look at step six. “ We are entirely ready for God to remove these defects of character.”

Some might ask how do I become ready?

I found the perfect quote to pair along with step six: it encourages surrender and willingness, “Letting go of control is not a sign of weakness, but a gateway to peace, strength, and transformation.” You can become ready while doing step 4 & 5 is identifying character defects and confessing them. A prayer I prayed that helped with this is found in Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

A revelation I had was I struggled with self hatred, unforgiveness, seeking validation from others. I realized these are the things I needed to let go to move forward in my faith.

Preparing my heart to uproot old thoughts and behaviors was hard and I needed help so I turned to the Bible. In Ephesians 4:22-23 it says “ Throw off your old, sinful nature and your former way of life, which was corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”, (by lust it means, a fierce hunger of power, wealth, or success.) When we go through step 3 we surrender the will of our lives to God and let go of our will which was built on our worldly beliefs. It is now not our job to change our lives on our own but allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out. Another helpful scripture is Ephesians 4:31-32 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead be kind to each other, tender hearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”

These scriptures have helped me work through Step in preparing my heart with Jesus to remove any defects of character. The truth is we have built our lives on our defects of character for survival and as God's children we are not called to live in survival mode. It is our inheritance to live life and life abundantly through Jesus. By letting go of our defects we become one step closer to the life God has promised us.
